The Ghosts Knocking At My Door.

This is a section of my book, What is to Be Undone.
And it is not necessarily easy reading.
The book has a singular focus: we face an impossible moment in this global, dying civilization. In the violent fits of fascistic might, we see the old colonial apparatus showing itself in full light. For many of those held captive by it, the reality of its systemic brutality has been kept at bay. And for the rest, that brutality has been a lived experience.
The veneer is quickly fading, and the costs of this technological nightmare are exponentially impossible. We face a world where climate instability has shaken every facet of life as our species has known it.
Everywhere, the consequences of this Empire flood our lives, and that will only continue.
The point is this: civilization is dying, but we don’t need to share its fate.
It is never too late to fight the Leviathan. And I don’t say this in a way to instill false hope or naivety: there is no guarantee we survive this. That is all the more reason to fight.
How the book unfolds is meant to identify the falsehoods civilization is built upon: to lay waste to ideas that History has led the victor by divine right. Civilization is a willingness to brutality, and it has advanced, not by ingenuity, but by opportunism and cruelty.
This chapter is a plea to understand how deeply civilization’s narratives burrow, showing how vital it is to divest from this horror by facing our own.
The path of the book is a series of challenges to the way we view and interact with this world, culminating in a plea to understand that the fires have come for this Empire, and they inevitably will again.
We need to understand what we face, because all life depends upon it.
By dragging it into the light, we free ourselves to act in kind.
This section draws me in as a character because it had to. I did not intend for that to be the case, but it came out this way. As such, there are content warnings for triggering sections.
       If necessary, please heed them.

For the fires, now, then and always,
